A Business Disability Forum guide to best practice for recruiting and retaining disabled people

The subject of this newsletter relates to a free preview of the Retention Toolkit & Maturity Model guide which was prepared by the Business Disability Forum (BDF). The BDF is a UK organisation that works with public and private sector organisations which assists in making it easier to do business with and employ people with disabilities. The main Retention Toolkit & Maturity Model document is a guide for recruiting and retaining disabled people and the free 16-page preview document provides 8 useful tips on how to achieve this. The Retention Toolkit dates from April 2016 but is an electronic resource which is subject to continuous updates. The 8 useful tips for recruiting and retaining disabled people are as follows:

  1. Look at your talent attraction strategy.
  2. Make sure websites are fully accessible.
  3. Work experience and trials.
  4. Make sure that any recruitment supplier or partner is disability confident.
  5. Have a workplace adjustment process which delivers the right adjustment quickly.
  6. Build the skills and confidence of line managers.
  7. Active engagement with any employees that have been absent.
  8. Create an employee network with links to senior leaders.
