Open Doors Initiative Seminar
O’Herlihy Access Consultancy were delighted to be invited to attend the Open Doors Initiative Seminar which was held in the Gibson Hotel on 27 November 2018.
The Open Doors Initiative was set up in September 2018 by a group of 14 private sector employers who recognised that there is a pool of potential employees from marginalised groups within society who are unable to access the labour market because of the high barriers to employment they face. Through the Open Doors Initiative these employers have pledged to address these barriers, working both together and individually to provide employment, opportunities and support to people across three marginalised groups:
-
People with disabilities
-
Young people under 25 with educational barriers
-
Refugee, asylum seekers and non-native English speakers
The Seminar was aimed companies interested in learning more about the Open Doors Initiative and provided information on the unique challenges and barriers faced by people with disabilities, long term unemployed youth and migrants when accessing employment.
Guest speakers at the event included Seònaid Ó Murchadha of Employer Disability Information (EDI), Brian Killoran of Immigrant Council of Ireland, and Sabina Cotter of the Irish Youth Foundation who gave insights into the how diverse and inclusive work environments benefit both employers and employees alike.
Speakers from Accenture and Positive2Work provided real examples of how employability programmes can be effectively managed within the workplace and the different supports available to employers.
In the closing remarks, David Stanton TD, Minister of State for Equality, Immigration, and Integration, expressed his full support for the Open Doors Initiative.
