Revision of Guide 71 - Guidelines for standards developers to address the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities

The International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) has recently established a Technical Advisory Group to assist in the revision of ISO/IEC Guide 71 Guidelines for standards developers to address the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities (originally published in 2001).

Guide 71 provides guidance to writers of relevant national and international Standards on how to take into account the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities.

The Guide aims to:

  1. inform, increase understanding and raise awareness about how human abilities impact on the usability of products, services and environments,
  2. outline the relationship between the requirements in standards and the accessibility and usability of products and services, and
  3. raise awareness about the benefits of adopting accessible design principles in terms of a wider market.

Eoin O’Herlihy of O’Herlihy Access Consultancy has been appointed as a member of the Technical Advisory Group and will be actively participating in the review of Guide 71.  For further details on the Guide click here or if you would like further information in relation to the Guide, please do not hesitate to contact one of our team on 01-4151285 or e-mail [email protected].
