Irish Wheelchair Association - Best Practice Guidelines - Designing Accessible Environments
The 2010 (2nd edition) of the Irish Wheelchair Association's Access Guidelines has recently been replaced with the 3rd edition of the Guidelines (July 2014). The new publication has been designed to influence and advocate for future legislation, the development of new regulations and improved access standards.
In the guidelines the IWA, defines access relating to the built environment as " “Free and unimpeded access to and from, and the use of all areas and functions of the buildings, facilities and physical features that make up the built environment". The guidelines a broken into a number of sections and cover:
- Policy and legislative background
- The External Environment and Building Approach
- Access to and Circulation Within a Building
- Access to and Use of Facilities Within the Built Environment
- Specific Building and Site Types
- Emergency Evacuation
