Introduction of Electric Buggies to the Cliffs of Moher

By Ursula Kearney

Towards the end of July 2022, two electric buggies were introduced to improve accessibility at the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The initiative is called ‘The Lifts of Moher’. It aims to provide people with disabilities or people reduced mobility an alternative option to experience everything the Cliffs of Moher have to offer.

The two buggies, named the Burren Buggy and Wild Atlantic Shuttle, are operated by trained staff. They provide visitors with a guided tour of the natural attraction from the viewing platforms overlooking the cliffs to the 19th century O’Brien’s Tower. The buggies are free of charge and no bookings are required to avail of the service.

Geraldine Enright, the Director of the Cliffs of Moher Experience stated, “This service is offered to those who are in need and the beauty of the experience is that users get to see and learn about the Cliffs in a way that they wouldn’t have otherwise.” She also added that the service is proving to be extremely popular and that the buggies are electric to keep with their sustainability ethos.

This initiative was the latest in a series of measures that the County Clare Visitor attraction introduced to further enhance accessibility on-site. Several areas were looked at to improve accessibility, including the inclusion of multiple hearing enhancement systems being installed throughout the Visitor Centre. There are three entrances from the Visitor Centre leading to the pathways to view and experience the Cliffs of Moher. Wheelchairs also are available for use from different areas on-site.

The website has an accessibility section which provides pre-visitor information for people to plan their journeys and remove some of the unknown elements about visiting a tourist attraction for the first time.
