Digi-ID (Digital skills education to support health and social inclusion for adults with intellectual disabilities)

The Digi ID project aims to address the challenge of digital inclusion and low usage of digital technologies amongst people with intellecual disabilities. It aims to develop a digital skills education programme to empower adults with intellectual disabilities with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage their health and social inclusion needs digitally to ensure they are not left behind in our digital age.

Digi-ID is on a mission to address the challenge of digital inclusion and low usage of digital technologies amongst people with intellectual disabilities. Through a co-creation process with over 200 people with intellectual disabilities across EU in Ireland, the Netherlands, France and Sweden are developing an innovative digital skills education programme delivered via an accessible solution/app. Health applications have become more prominent, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Without digital skills citizens with intellectual disabilities would experience much poorer health and wellbeing. At the heart of Digi-ID is the Citizen Advisory Panel comprising of seven people with intellectual disabilities employed to work .

James Delaney, from Athlone, Co Westmeath, is a member of the panel. At the start of this year, James didn't have his own email address. Now he stars in a video tutorial in the app, explaining how to set one up.
He said: "Using email helps me stay in contact with my friends, family and colleagues. I really enjoyed making the video tutorials. Now I can show you how to access the internet!"’
