Building Code Compliance and Consultancy Services for new medical training facility – Part M Building Code Compliance and Universal Design Consultancy Services for RCSI New Academic Education Building (NAEB)

O’Herlihy Access Consultancy (OHAC) acted as access consultants on the construction of the New Academic Education Building (NAEB) for the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), located at 26 (Part of) 31 York Street, Proud’s Lane & part of the Ardilaun Centre, Cuffe Street, Cuffe Lane and St. Stephens Green West, Dublin 2. The new building consists of a six – storey educational and medical training facility over 4 basement levels and sub-basement and accommodating multi-purpose sports facilities with related activities and prayer rooms at basement levels -3 and -4. The construction project took place within the existing RCSI campus which posed additional challenges for the design of the new building.
OHAC provided all the following services:
- Universal Design strategy and engagement with key stakeholders throughout the project.
- Preparation and lodgement of DAC and RDAC
- Liaising with design team and contractors on regular basis.
- Reviewing design team proposals (e.g. reception designs, signage designs, WC layouts, auditorium design, door design, access control, visual contrast, seating, ironmongery)
- Providing ongoing technical advice throughout the project duration
- Carrying out inspections and advising the contractor on access issues.
- Part M Ancillary Certifier sign off on completion of the project.
Note This project has highly commended in the category of Universal Design Building at the 2018 RIAI Awards and won the People’s Choice Award for building of the year.
