ISO DIS 21542: Accessibility and Usability of the Built Environment

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) recently announced that ISO CD 21542: ‘Accessibility and Usability of the Built Environment ‘ has gone out to enquiry as an ISO Draft International Standard for comment amongst Member Bodies. It is envisaged that the international standard will provide building users, architects, designers, engineers, builders, building owners and managers, manufacturers, policy makers and legislators with requirements and recommendations to create a sustainable built environment which is accessible to all.

As you may be aware the NSAI is Ireland’s representative body and the Access for All Standards Consultative Committee - Working Group 1 has been monitoring the development of this important accessibility standard.  All comments from representative bodies must be submitted to the ISO by the end of April 2010. The ISO working group has about three months to finialise the document which will thereafter become an international standard. The ISO hopes to publish this important standard by the end of 2010 or early in 2011.   Eoin O’Herlihy of O’Herlihy Access Consultancy is the Chairperson of Working Group 1 and will keep you up to date on this important built environment accessibility standard.
