Tactile Walking Surface Indicators

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) Technical Management Board recently approved the restart of the ISO 23599 project which deals with “Tactile Walking Surface Indicators” (ISO CD 23599).  The project is being managed by ISO TC 173 WG8 and the scope of this standard is

“This International Standard specifies the requirements for the design and installation of tactile indicators installed on walking surfaces to assist in safe and independent mobility of persons with visual contrast and illumination“.

To ensure Ireland is actively involved in the development of this standard, Working Group 1 (Built Environment) of the Access for All Standards Consultative Committee within the NSAI has established a sub group to liaise with the ISO TC 173 WG8 and to monitor progress on this important standard.

To date the Irish sub group has reviewed ISO CD 23599 and submitted feedback and comments to ISO TC 173 WG8.  These comments will be reviewed at an upcoming meeting in Stockholm.

O’Herlihy Access Consultancy will keep you updated on developments as this standard progresses.
