€10 million in housing capital funding for accessible housing

Minister for Housing and Planning, Jan O’Sullivan  recently announced (3rd July 2013) that an extra €10 million in housing capital funding, on top of the current budget amount of €100 million, is to be allocated for disability housing.

According to Minister O’Sullivan, “The housing needs of people with a disability are a priority. Ensuring that people with a disability have good quality accommodation, suitable to their needs, is essential to ensure that people can play a full, active role in the community”.

Because of the active management of her department's capital allocation budget, Minister O’Sullivan is able to allocate an additional €10m to provide homes for people with a disability. This amount will enable the provision of 80-90 new homes this year, on top of the 800 new homes to be delivered through the already allocated funding of €100 million in the period from 2012-2014.

The Minister also indicated that she will also be calling for extra funding for housing adaptation grants for persons with disabilities.

The Government last year published an implementation framework for the National Housing Strategy for People with Disabilities and the funding announcement is a sign of its ongoing commitment to this important matter.
