Embedding Universal Design in Tourism: Key Insights from the Fáilte Ireland Webinar

Scenic Irish landscape with green hills, winding water, and distant mountains under a clear sky.

Fáilte Ireland’s webinar on Accessibility & Inclusive Tourism for All, was delivered as part of the EU Just Transition Tourism Learning Network Programme, brought together voices from across the tourism and accessibility sectors to explore how Universal Design can shape the future of Irish tourism.

O’Herlihy Access Consultancy’s CEO, Eoin O’Herlihy, was invited as a panel member to share practical insights on embedding accessibility into tourism projects. Throughout the session, one message came through clearly: when Universal Design is built into tourism from the very beginning, destinations become more inclusive, more sustainable, and ultimately more successful.

Key messages from the discussion

The webinar highlighted several practical actions for organisations, public bodies and tourism providers:

Embed Universal Design at every stage:

Universal Design needs to be written into project briefs, plans and reporting structures from concept design through to construction, handover and ongoing operation.

Write accessibility into project requirements:

New tourism projects should include clear Universal Design Requirements in briefs, tenders and contracts. This helps ensure that designers, contractors, vendors and suppliers understand what is expected and can deliver inclusive solutions from day one.

Support staff to maintain accessibility on site:

Even the best-designed facilities can become inaccessible if they are not managed properly. Staff need training and ongoing awareness so that accessible routes, toilets, signage and services are maintained.

Appoint an access consultant as part of the design team:

Having a dedicated access champion within a project or organisation can make a real difference. This person keeps accessibility on the agenda, coordinates actions, and supports colleagues to follow through on Universal Design commitments.

Why this matters for Irish tourism

Inclusive tourism is creating destinations that genuinely welcome everyone. As Ireland continues to invest in sustainable tourism, Universal Design offers a framework for:

  • Opening up tourism experiences to a wider range of visitors.
  • Supporting local economies by attracting repeat and family-friendly business.
  • Enhancing reputation as a country that values dignity, independence and equal participation.

As Eoin and the other panellists emphasised, accessible tourism is good for people, good for communities and good for business.

Let’s keep working together to create tourism experiences that are disability-inclusive and truly welcoming for all.
