Built Environment Accessibility: How to Prepare or Review a Disability Access Certificate Application
Course Description
This course equips learners new to the area of disability with an overview of the provisions of the Disability Act 2005, Part M of the Second Schedule of the Building Regulations and other equality legislation. Participants will acquire the knowledge required to facilitate and develop or assess a Disability Access Certificate Application.
Course Aims
The aim of this course is to equip participants with an understanding of the concepts of Universal Access and Universal Design in the built and external environment. The content is particularly beneficial to access officers, planners, architects, area engineers, health and safety officers, developers, building contractors, project managers and facilities managers.
Key Outcomes
On completion of the Programme, participants will:
- Understand the concepts of Universal Accessibility and Universal Design.
- Explore the key design criteria for an accessible building and its surroundings.
- Understand the key amendments of Part M 2022, with increased awareness of the implications of TGD M 2022 on the design of new buildings, extensions, material alterations and certain material changes of use.
- Strengthen their knowledge of the Disability Act 2005, Part M of the Second Schedule of the Building Regulations, Building Control Act 2007 and other relevant legislation and their understanding of an accessible design process.
- Appreciate the key role of management in maintaining built environment accessibility.
- Learn the key requirements and criteria to develop or assess a Disability Access Certificate.
- Explore opportunities for disability proofing the planning and design processes.
- Develop a route appraisal checklist including identifying barriers and solutions.
- Reflect on learning from best practice case studies.
- Be equipped to negotiate with stakeholders for the implementation of ongoing and future work.
