Disability Awareness & Equality Training

Course Description

CPD accredited course, eligible for part funding through the Work and Access Grant – funding of up to €20,000 available to Irish Employers.

This course aims to equip learners new to the area of disability and accessibility with an understanding of disability and inclusion issues as it affects their role, their organisation and wider society. Participants will be provided with an overview of the provisions of Disability and Equality legislation. The course also aims to raise awareness and help participants understand disability inclusion issues at all touchpoints within an organisation including; customer services, information provision, building & facilities and the workplace.

Course Aims

Disability awareness training is essential for building a respectful and inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and understood. It helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions about disability, equipping staff with the knowledge and confidence to interact appropriately and supportively with colleagues, clients, and customers with disabilities. This training also promotes understanding of legal obligations and best practices in accessibility, contributing to a more equitable work environment and improving the overall employee and customer experience.

The course also aims to allow participants explore their attitudes to disability and the role of society in creating an inclusive culture. This course is suitable for staff at all levels and is of particular benefit to people working in a supervisory role or human resources.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Models of disability and ableism.
  • Effective communication and assistance.
  • Role of the access champion and access team/ Disability ERG.
  • Key pillars of accessibility.
  • Benchmarking accessibility.

Key Outcomes

Participants who attend the course will:

  • Acquire a working knowledge of disability and equality legislation.
  • Explore their own attitude towards disability and accessibility.
  • Define the medical and social model of disability.
  • Identify barriers faced by people with disabilities, how to remove these barriers and methods to make services accessible for all.
  • Develop an understanding of accessible communications (written, spoken, signed, and digital)
  • Develop an awareness of practical measures in relation to accessible service delivery and equality issues.
  • Understand the principles of reasonable accommodation.
