Course Description
Information helps us all to make decisions and choices about our lives and enables us to live independently, to access social rights and entitlements and take part fully in society. Providing information to people with disabilities is a key responsibility for any organisation and it is important to recognise that information comes in many ways (e.g. written, digital, spoken and signed).
During this session participants will gain an understanding of relevant legislation, national and international best practice, and the importance of accessible information for employees, customers and visitors. Participants will also gain an insight into how to design and manage information based on a Universal Design Approach.
Course Aims
This course aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to plan and produce accessible information and events for all. This course is open to all but would be particularly relevant to people working in communications and human resources.
Key Outcomes
Participants who successfully complete this course will:
- Gain knowledge of the relevant legislation in relation to Information provision and communications, including the Disability Act 2005, the Code of Practice on Accessibility of Public Services and Information provided by Public Bodies, LGMSB guidelines and more.
- Understand the legal, social and business benefits of providing accessible information for all customers and staff.
- Learn how to assist in the design, development and monitoring of information and communication policies within their organisations; and
- Understand the organisational approach required to successfully implement information access within their sector.
- Gain an understanding on how to make written, digital and spoken and signed information accessible and usable for all (for example, Sign language; accessible videos; Marketing, branding, websites, information in alternative formats).
