Making Services Accessible for All

Course Description

This course aims to equip participants with an overview of how to make both services and employment within their organisation accessible to all. The course is aimed at staff working in the private, public, community and voluntary sectors and will be of interest to all those that want to improve accessibility of their services and employment policies and procedures within their organisation. The training will enable participants to review and assess accessibility and disability inclusion within their organisation and take steps to make their services and workplace accessible.

*Please note the training sessions on both days take place between 10 am and 4 pm.

Course Aims

The overall aim of this training is to provide participants  (e.g. Access Officers under the Disability Act 2005) with an understanding the key criteria that must be addressed in order to make services fully accessible for all users regardless of their age, size or disability. The key areas covered include; accessible information, built environment accessibility, employment, procurement, events and customer services accessibility.

The course also aims is to ensure that all those with a responsibility for accessible service provision can develop an effective accessibility strategy for their organisation and understand how to embed accessibility and Universal Design within their organisation.

Key Outcomes

Upon completion of this programme, participants will:

  • Understand and appreciate the barriers faced by people accessing the services provided by their organisation.
  • Appreciate the requirements of the disability and equality legislation.
  • Develop an understanding of the key criteria to make services and employment accessible.
  • Be able to review the existing levels of accessibility within their workplace and identify practical steps to make their services and employment procedures accessible.
  • Be able to develop an access policy and action plan to allow successful implementation of accessible service delivery and inclusive workplaces.
  • Understand how to support staff with a disability at all stages of the employment relationship, recruitment, development and retention.
  • Develop an understanding of practical measures to manage inclusive employment, disclosure and reasonable accommodations to maximise employee engagement and organisational effectiveness.
  • Learn how to strategically assess progress in relation to accessibility.
  • Understand the importance of internal and external consultation with key stakeholders.
  • Learn how to assist in the design, development and monitoring of information and communication policies within their organisations.
  • Understand the organisational approach to disability proofing and gain the skills to implement disability proofing within their organisation.
  • Identify key priorities for 2025/2026.
