Built Environment Accessibility: Making Buildings Accessible for All

Course Description

This programme introduces participants to the key principles of Universal Access, Universal Design, Neurodiversity in Building Design, Disability Access Certificates and Access Auditing to ensure all aspects of the built environment are accessible.

This practical workshop is highly interactive, using a variety of learning techniques including videos, discussions, case studies, design appraisals, route appraisals, problem-solving of everyday scenarios, and working examples of everyday barriers faced by people with disabilities and more.

Day one introduces participants to disability and inclusion issues as it affects their role, their organisation and wider society. Participants will be provided with an overview of the provisions of Disability and Equality legislation, models of disability and Part M legislation. Days two and three of the course aims to build on participants’ existing knowledge, applying these skills to an audit of the built environment.

Course Aims

The aim of this workshop is to ensure that all those with responsibility for or interest in the built environment or facilities management, develop an effective accessibility strategy for their organisation.

This course is tailored to meet the needs of architects, facilities managers, building control managers, and planning staff.

Key Outcomes

On completion of the programme, participants who successfully complete this course  will:

  • Understand Disability Equality and Accessibility (Legislation, Access to Services, Disability Awareness).
  • Strengthen their knowledge of the Disability Act 2005, Part M of the Second Schedule of the Building Regulations, Disability Access Certificates and other relevant legislation.
  • Understand the key amendments of Part M 2022.
  • Learn the key requirements and criteria to develop or assess a Disability Access Certificate. 
  • Increase their awareness of the implications of TGD M 2022 on the design of new buildings, extensions, material alterations and certain material changes of use.
  • Increase their understanding of an accessible design process.
  • Understand the concepts of Universal Accessibility, Universal Design, neurodiversity and access to the built and external environment.
  • Appreciate the key role of management in maintaining built environment.
  • Understand the process of access auditing
