How Bus Companies are taking steps to improve Independent Transport for All

Dublin Bus imagesMany people with disabilities find themselves having to verbally explain their disability to public transport drivers. A recent initiative by one of the UK’s bus companies has identified a way to overcome this by developing the ‘Helping Hand Accessibility Card’ which removes the need for these explanations. Many disabilities are invisible, and the discreet ‘Helping Hand Accessibility Card’ has been designed with messages that focus on the type of assistance required and not the persons disability. The messages on the card include:

It is possible that this type of card could be internationally recognised as it is unbranded and could be used on other operators’ services.

In the Irish context, Dublin Bus has developed an Accessibility Policy that considers the varying accessibility needs of their customers. They have also developed the free Travel Assistance Scheme to help people use public transport on their own where an assistant can accompany them the first few times they travel and give advice on planning a journey. Dublin Bus has a progressive accessibility policy and a key element of this is providing employees with disability awareness training.

Also, the Joint Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport holds consultations related to the Accessibility of Public Transport for People with Disabilities in Dail Eireann.
