The Construction Industry Council (CIC) UK Launch ‘Essential Principles Guide’ Initiative for Built Environment Professionals – Creating an Accessible and Inclusive Environment

The Construction Industry Council (CIC) in the UK have launched a new initiative called ‘The Essential Principles Guide’. The initiative has developed from the governmental project ‘Built Environment Professional Education Project’ which is now being brought forward and adapted into industry by the CIC.

This initiative looks to build on the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games by trying to shift the way design skills and practices are taught in the UK. The CIC aim to have mandatory training for professionals in the industry to improve their skills in designing more inclusive places and spaces for future generations.

Many Professional Institutions are now endorsing the guide which contains six principles suggested by the Office for Disability Issues. The principles are designed to guide, support and motivate designers when making decisions for clients, employers and society. The guide will also help professionals meet their obligations when designing with the goal of integrating the principles into all aspects of their professional work.  The six principles are:

  1. Contribute to building an inclusive society now and in the future.
  2. Apply professional and responsible judgement and take a leadership role.
  3. Apply and integrate the principles of inclusive design from the outset of a project.
  4. Do more than just comply with legislation and codes.
  5. Seek multiple views to solve accessibility and inclusivity challenges.
  6. Acquire the skills, knowledge, understanding and confidence to make inclusion the norm not the exception.
