Disability (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2016.

The main aim of the Bill is to amend several pieces of legislation so that Ireland is in a position to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Ireland signed the Convention in 2007 and, since then, successive Governments have emphasised Ireland’s commitment to proceed to ratification as quickly as possible, taking into account the need to ensure all necessary legislative requirements under the Convention are met.

The Bill addresses a range of legislative barriers to ratification which are not addressed separately in other legislation (mainly in the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015). The opportunity is also being taken to progress a number of other miscellaneous amendments to equality and disability legislation.

As outlined on the House of the Oireachtas website the “Bill entitled an Act to to give further effect to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities done at New York on 13 December 2006; to amend the Juries Act 1976 , the Electoral Act 1992 , the National Disability Authority Act 1999 , the Equal Status Act 2000, the Disability Act 2005 , the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014; and to provide for related matters”.
