How to make your website accessible - British Standard Institute to launch new standard entitled “BS 8878 Web Accessibility: Code of practice”

Are you considering updating your website in the near future to make it more accessible for all users. If so, it will be important to consider that the British Standards Institute are launching a new standard - ‘BS 8878 Web Accessibility: Code of practice’ on the 1st of December 2010.

The new standard is designed to help you provide accessible and enjoyable web experiences for people with disabilities and older users. It will assist your organisation to build a fully accessible web service which will enable you to reach a wider community of potential users and will ensure compliance with relevant disability and equality legislation.

There are also a number of Irish guidelines that can assist in the development of an accessible website. For example the National Disability Authority Centre for Excellence in Universal Design provides guidance on Procuring accessible IT solutions, web accessibility techniques for developers, designers and content creators and auditing websites in relation to access.
