The Saudi Forum on Universal Design - OHAC present at the first international conference on Universal Design in Saudi Arabia.
Eoin O’Herlihy recently (December 2012) attended and presented at the first international conference on Universal Design in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Forum on Universal Design covered issues relating to built environment accessibility, accessible transportation, Universal Design and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessibility. Experts from more than 24 countries presented, exchanged ideas, debated and discussed the scope of Universal Design and accessibility.
The conference aimed to promote the understanding and implementation of accessibility of the sustainable built, social and virtual environments, including architectural, infrastructural design, transportation systems, habitat, and electronic information and communication technologies so that everyone, including people with disabilities and older persons are able to fully participate and contribute to society.
Eoin spoke on the topic of improving the accessibility of public transport and the presentation covered:
- What is accessibility?
- What key criteria should be considered to make public transport accessible?
- The barriers faced by people accessing transportation services.
- Ten innovative ways to make public transportation accessible (customer services, the built environment, pre-visitor information, ticketing, staff assistance, transport fleet and information, communication and technology).
