European standards for making your information accessible

Cartoon images of a notepad and pen, a computer, a radio and a camera and monitor.Inclusion Europe, The European association of people with intellectual disabilities and their families have produced a useful document titled “Information for all - European standards for making information easy to read and understand.”

The standards are a useful set of guidelines designed to assist anyone who wants to make their information easy to understand. The aim of the guidance document was to make information associated with lifelong learning easy to understand for people with intellectual disabilities but are equally useful to people with reading difficulties or people who do not have English as their first language. The provision of good, easy to understand information allows people to find out what they need to know and to make their own choices and decisions.

Article 9, of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities outlines the UN commitment to supporting persons with disabilities to ensure access to information.

The standard is broken down into five easy to read sections that use tips, simple rules and commentary clearly describing how we can all make information more accessible.

  1. General Standards for easy to understand information
  2. Standards for written information
  3. Standards for electronic information
  4. Standards for video information
  5. Standards for audio information
