Social Development Direct – Disability Inclusion Guidance for Companies

People with disabilities often face barriers in society that limit their full and equal participation in many aspects of life. Due to these barriers, people with disabilities are less likely to be employed than people without disabilities. Companies often don’t address disability inclusion in their business operations and as a result, many people with disabilities remain excluded from the workforce.

In order to combat this exclusion CDC Investment Works (the UK's development finance institution) worked with Social Development Direct (a leading provider of social development assistance and research services) recently to publish guidance on disability inclusion for companies. This guidance aims to promote disability inclusion in businesses to ensure people with disabilities can work and access the products and services provided by the companies.

The guideline outlines the four main elements of an inclusive company, which are as follows:

The guideline also provides examples of barriers faced by people with disabilities as well as describing how companies can identify these barriers and plan on how to address or remove them allowing for a more inclusive company. The guideline also showcases two specific companies and describes how they approached disability inclusion in their business operations. It encourages businesses to address disability inclusion as many people with disabilities can bring valuable skills and experiences that can increase productivity for a company.
