Designing for Diversity – Make design about the individual – New guidelines published

The Equality and Diversity Team of North Somerset Council in the UK have recently (2013) published a very interesting guide entitled "Designing for Diversity – Make Design about the individual".

The guide has been written in the style of a Code to promote inclusive design as a way of getting at the heart of the issue. It is broken into three sections:

  1. Section one looks at understanding how you should design and who you are designing for.
  2. Section two offers advice on putting your design into practice; how’s it different when it comes to inclusive design?
  3. Section three lists guidance to assist with design solutions relating to specific people’s needs from people with disabilities, to people from minority ethnic backgrounds, carers or parents.

One of the features of the Guide/Code is that there are a number of talking points and issues relating to current practice; Reflections that provide feedback from people using places and transport and examples to illustrate the principles of Inclusive Design provided throughout the document.
