Dementia Friendly Housing Charter: Guidance on delivering a dementia-friendly approach to housing

The Alzheimer’s Society (UK) has recently produced (March 2017) the ‘Dementia – friendly housing charter’. The authors of the publication are Bruce Moore, Vanessa Pritchard-Wilkes, Sara Miles and Robyn Sweeney.

The Dementia Friendly Housing charter is a guidance toolkit for a dementia friendly approach to housing and is aimed at a wide variety of professionals ranging from housing providers, planners, architects, builders, surveyors, landlords, occupational therapists, home improvement agencies, property maintenance companies, building control, telecare providers through to property developers.

Although aimed at organisations in the UK, the toolkit is likely to create an awareness amongst professionals in Ireland as many of the challenges encountered by people who are affected by dementia in the UK are just as relevant in Ireland.  The charter identifies many ways in which home environment for people with the condition can be improved.
